If you’ve ever doubted that small changes can lead to big results, just ask Nick Olano, RD, CDN—the friendly face helping shoppers make smarter food choices at ShopRite of Hillsdale and ShopRite of New City.

Nick’s passion for nutrition started with his own story. As a middle schooler, he struggled with his weight and a steady diet of junk food. But through better food choices and exercise, he lost 50 pounds—and found a new path in life. Later, when food intolerances made his meals more complicated, he realized just how important it was to help others navigate restricted diets with confidence.

Now, as a retail registered dietitian, Nick brings that personal insight to every aisle. “My favorite part is seeing positive changes in real-time,” he says. “When someone tells me about a healthier dinner they made, or I spot new, nourishing items in their cart—it’s a win.”

This spring, Nick’s snacking advice is all about flavor and fun. He encourages shoppers to get creative with fruits and veggies—think watermelon with Tajin, mango salsa, or feta-topped melon salad. For veggies, pair them with hummus or yogurt-based dips to keep things fresh and exciting. “Healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring,” he says.
He also loves busting myths—like the big one about fruit and sugar. “Yes, fruit contains sugar, but it’s natural sugar with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants,” he explains. “Pair it with a protein or fat, like string cheese or nut butter, and you’ll get stable energy that lasts.”
Nick’s snack staples? You’ll often catch him with a banana and peanut butter or even Crispy Fruit paired with almond butter when he’s on the go.
His top shopping cart must-haves:
  • A rainbow of fruits (fresh, frozen, canned—you name it)
  • A variety of veggies
  • Lean proteins like fish, beans, lentils, and nuts

And the best part? Nick wants every shopper to know that grocery store dietitian services are completely free—no insurance, no appointments needed. Just walk in and start the conversation.

“Whether you’ve got five minutes or you’re looking for a full plan, we’re here to help,” he says. “Our job is to make healthy eating approachable, doable, and—most of all—enjoyable for everyone.”
