More people are paying attention to their grooming and hygiene as having a personal care routine is integral to a person’s well-being. According to a survey of more than 2,300 people, the average woman uses 12 products containing 168 unique ingredients every day while the average man uses 6 personal care products with 85 unique ingredients. Some of these ingredients may be harmless, but other commonly found chemicals in products such as phthalates are found to have a negative effect on our health. As people strive to make healthy changes in their lifestyle for the coming year, it may be high time to make some healthy changes to improve your personal care or makeup routine. Not only will making these choices be better for you, but you’ll feel the difference once you’ve made a few adjustments to your personal care routine. Here are some simple, natural beauty tips that will make a huge impact on the way you look and feel.

Choose sulfate-free shower products

Sulfates are found in a majority of shower products to give you that foaming action and make you think that you’re getting squeaky clean. However, sulfates can strip hair of essential oils and make it look dull. Moreover, it can fade hair color and strip it of moisture. Sulfates can also be irritating to the skin and cause it to lose its glow. Instead of foaming shower and bath products, choose hair products that contain no sulfates to make your hair and skin look better than ever. Natural or organic shampoos and conditioners are sulfate-free, and as a bonus, they leave your hair looking silky and smelling fresh.

Pick a healthier lip product

According to statistics, 138.8 million Americans used lip products such as lipstick, lip gloss, and lip balm in 2017. As you can use—and ingest—a significant amount of lip products in your lifetime, then switching to products with fewer chemicals, preservatives, and artificial coloring and flavoring may be better for your health. When choosing a lip balm or lip product, don’t just make you pick based on the scent, flavor, color, or packaging. Make it a point to check out the ingredients and find out if it has moisturizing and soothing benefits and whether it’s ethically produced.

Go barefaced at least once a week

Wearing makeup can boost your self-confidence, but it’s important to let your skin breathe at least once a week. Pick a no-makeup day in any given week and focus on skin care on that day. You can do a full 10-step Korean skincare routine to enhance your glow, then follow it up with a light coat of sunscreen before heading outdoors. If you can’t bear the thought of not having any makeup on when out in public, then go for a three-product minimum—a bit of tinted moisturizer, lip balm, and some brow product can make you look polished but will still allow your natural beauty to shine through.

Making a few changes to your personal care routine not only improves your health, but it’s also empowering as you get to invest in your well-being. Try these natural beauty tips to have a healthier personal care and makeup routine today.
